Our starter-up home but we stayed over 30 years!

Well, it appears Jeff had a different idea. He wanted his crib in our room, just like it was in our little apartment.
He screamed and screamed ...and then wanted to join us in bed.
Every day I carried him and said this is Jeffy's room...all yours. Your toys are here. We have our room--you have yours.
He still cried for a month. Then Dr. Spock said you just have to let him cry...and don't give in...and finally after 4 days we had peace in the house and the bed to ourselves.
That is, until he learned to crawl out of his crib and he would go to Allen's side to get in and he was never refused. There were many times that I ended up sleeping in the crib because I couldn't sleep 3 in a double bed. Triple beds were rare in those days and it never even entered our minds.
Anyway we had big retaining walls in our driveway and in the back to hold back the 2nd terrace. The street above us was being excavated...and every night after dinner, the 3 of us would go to gather big rocks. To this day the wall is still standing.....a labor of love
.Retirement came and everyone said maybe I could buy Allen an extra couple years down in florida. No more urging...I wanted my husband to live....so we moved....and here I am.
I'm truly glad we made the move...life is so much simpler here..

I wonder if anyone else remembers..or am I too old?

Thoughts drift in and out of my mind at no particular time of the day. These musings just appear.

Like for instance...the little slot that used to be on bathroom medicine cabinets for men to drop their razor blades in. Wonder what happened when it all filled up.

Did anybody's Mother make 'orange candy' out of the pealings of naval oranges and I don't know what the other ingredients were...but I loved it.

We used to take a clove of garlic and rub it on a piece of toasted rye bread...and so delicious.

We used to take our tablets or notebooks and drop ink on it and create Roarch Tests and see if we could identify what it appeared to be.

We didn't use a kazoo to make music...took a comb with a piece of tissue paper or toilet paper...and if it didn't tickle your lips to much...compose our own beautiful music.

I wonder if anyone had to wear 'snuggies' on cold days...tops and bottoms...embarrassing but oh so warm and cozy.

Just thoughts and more thoughts. My Sister Elayne and I changed our dresses when we came home from school and put on playclothes.
I wore her hand-me-downs since she was 3 years older.

We used to lie on our stomachs with the radio on to do our homework. It was such a natural position for us.

I can still smell the musty smell on trains from the upholstered seats.

Comfortable...but smelly! I can still see the conductor with his gold buttons on his vest and jacket.

Wonder why they always made men's suits with vests. Most men never wore them.

What makes these thoughts clutter my brain at this time in my life...I haven't the faintest....

If that's all there is, my friend!

In the 40's Peggy Lee wrote a song "If that's all there is, my friend, if that's all there is...then bring out the booze and let's keep dancing!

This song entered my mind today because a dear friend of mine was going over some things that were part of an estate.

Our kids can't take our things...you can't put 2 houses in 1 house. So what to do with these treasures that lined our wall units and made our houses interesting.

Is this what happens when a house is made barren by deaths and illness.

We collected over the years...and then ....all for naught.

Perhaps Peggy Lee was right. I really don't know!

My old telephone directory!

One of the last things I packed when we moved to Florida was the telephone book. I might need it!

Well, it's been 20 years now and my life has changed a lot and so has the info in the phone book. Two decades of decayed and yellowed pages of the people I once had daily interchange with.

Now it's a phone call and Christmas cards...and as the years melt into one another...it seems like light years away.

I believe I have grown in ways since we left. In other ways we were important people in our town especially to little boys and girls who wanted toys.

I don't need this book any longer. I can get all this information on my computer in a second.........anybody's number and address.

Progress has intervened and I just love it.

Why am I having qualms about ditching it. It's one of the last things I have left from New Kensington, Pa. other than my memories.

After my father moved to Florida, he would go over all the businesses in the downtown area...and he recalled them all. I didn't realize it then, but it was a memory test of his.

Now I find myself doing exactly the same thing....just thinking and remembering. It wasn't all that beautiful or great...but it was where I grew up...my childhood....my young married life.

Now I'm donating it to solid waste management...maybe it can be recyled into more paper...maybe it can enter this century.

I'm letting go.......

Childhood

Is it possible that one can live their lives two times over.   I spend my time thinking and I can almost recall many pages of my life.

What people have said to me.....when I was very small like 3 or 4 relatives would ask me who I liked better my father or my mother.  Even at that tender age I knew to answer both.   It just seemed right.    Or they were always going to take my nose.......haven't heard that in many a year.

Not lacking for girlfriends, we spent our time playing hopscotch,  hitting a ball against the church next door and singing songs that we bought at the 5 and 10.   The sheets all came in different colors...but it was the lyrics that held our interest.   It didn't occur to us that we couldn't sing....our lungs were loud and sounded like sheer enjoyment.

Songs such as the Music Goes Round and Round, Goody Goody for Me....When the Moon comes over the Mountain... Little Man You've Had a Busy Day......or  we would tap dance doing The Waltz Clog....or Shuffle Off to Buffalo....or Tea For Two.

Jumping rope got our hearts beating fast as we sang everytime we swung the rope...rythmally

Living next door to the Ukranian Church of the Holy Virgin provided us steep steps to jump, challenging each other who could jump the highest.

All this came to a disastrous  halt when my Mother passed away.   She was my world...and nothing has ever been the same since.  She was just 41.

I'm Back

I've been lazy~  haven't written a new blog in a long time.   I do think a lot but never write down my thoughts ... figure they would be too boring to must people.

Well, it's that time of the year again for Jewish people to take inventory of their souls and try to live 'the good decent life'.

There's so much happening in the world and I feel very small and humble and unable to contribute much.

I'm spiritual and grateful for everything I see, hear, smell, and feel.

Even though I know my age and my calendar confirms it, I've been granted many years and I actually have the joy of  knowing and seeing  my great grand nieces and nephews, and I consider that quite an accomplishment.

When I look back at my life, all things considered, I'm quite content.   I got to share a great marriage with my husband Allen.  I had the privilege  of raising Jeff.  I'm saddened that I didn't have that with my daughter Rhonda Lee.

Paul, I definitely consider a bonus in my life...and his two sons and their wives and children.

All in all.....I'm happy to have Jeff and Donna so near.

What more can a person ask for????   I do ask for peace in the world....and for the Mideast to be able to get things in perspective.    For Isis to enjoy living rather than the alternative and we'd all feel a lot safer.

I do worry for the generations to come and I pray that the world will go on and on and people will be happy and glad for what we have achieved in my time.    What will technology come to???   Will the world be run by robots?     I pray that human beings will never be replaced.

We're almost entering the season of Rosh Hashonah....and our Torah starts at the very beginning with Abraham and Isaac.  We're taught that Abraham took Isaac to offer him as a sacrifice to God.   But now I see this...and it's very unsettling.

Ishmael was fourteen years old when Abraham's son Isaac was born to a different mother, Sarah. Sarah had finally borne her own child, even though she had passed her child bearing period. When she found Ishmael teasing Isaac, Sarah told Abraham to send both Ishmael and Hagar away. She declared that Ishmael would not share in Isaac's inheritance. Abraham was greatly distressed by his wife's words and sought the advice of his God. God told Abraham not to be distressed but to do as his wife commanded. God reassured Abraham that "in Isaac shall seed be called to thee." (Genesis 21:12) He also said that Ishmael would make a nation, "because he is thy seed". (Genesis 21:9–13)
Early the next morning, Abraham brought Hagar and Ishmael out together. He gave her bread and water and sent them away. The two wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba until her bottle of water was completely consumed. In a moment of despair, she burst into tears. After God heard the boy's voice, an angel of the Lord confirmed to Hagar that he would become a great nation. A well of water then appeared so that it saved their lives. As the boy grew, he became a skilled archer living in the wilderness of Paran. Eventually his mother found a wife for Ishmael from her home country, the land of Egypt. (Genesis 21:14–21)

Abraham and Isaac[edit]

Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac. From a 14th-century Missal
Main article: Binding of Isaac
At some point in Isaac's youth, Abraham was commanded by God to offer his son up as a sacrifice in the land of Moriah. The patriarch traveled three days until he came to the mount that God told him of. He commanded the servants to remain while he and Isaac proceeded alone into the mount. Isaac carried the wood upon which he would be sacrificed. Along the way, Isaac asked his father where the animal for the burnt offering was, to which Abraham replied "God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering". Just as Abraham was about to sacrifice his son, he was interrupted by the angel of the LORD, and he saw behind him a "ram caught in a thicket by his horns", which he sacrificed instead of his son. For his obedience he received another promise of numerous descendants and abundant prosperity. After this event, Abraham went to Beersheba.

Iqbal Hossain ·

After departing from Egypt Abraham took Sarah & Egyptian princes Hagar (who become servant of Sarah) they resettled Canaan. Since Sarah was barren for long time, she decided to give her maidservant Hagar to Abraham as wife (in Canaan they lived together for 10 years) as per Bible "Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave-girl, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife" Genesis 16:3 Ismael was born to Hagar son of Abraham, then Abraham was 86 years old. When Abraham was 99 years old then Isaac born to Sarah son of Abraham. So Ismael was older & first son of Abraham AND Issac was youger 2nd, son of Abraham. Look at what God said in his Bible (Genesis) - "Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son" (Gn 25:12) Now how come God can make big mistake, as he said 'Take your son Isaac, your only son" Gn 22:2
It means within 10/15 years after Ismail's birth God forgot, what he said earlier ?

We're not in control

The growth of our hair reveals no sensation to our bodies.  either negative or positive.

The growth of our finger and toe nails are also devoid of any feeling as they grow.

That's how I feel about time.

It just keeps moving forward and we know it, but can't do anything about  it.   I guess that's what memories are for.  I think I've lived my same life over twice remembering all the major happenings in my life.   Pledging the Girl Scout oath...or singing and learning all the lyrics to songs from cheap songsheets bought in the 5 and 10.   Remembering in detail how I felt when my family told me that my sweet Mother at 41 had died.    Or when I heard that my sister at 36 had died.

Or when Allen and I heard that our daughter wasn't going to live.   These stand out in my mind and I re-live them again and again.

When I received a phone call from Allen's doctor letting me know that he had good news...that my darling had expired.   To the doctor, it meant that his comatose patient was no longer in agony.

Many times I would like to put a moment on 'hold' because it's too wonderful to let go....but that's not the way the world is created.   When Jeff first said daddy and mama...music to our ears.

When Jeff rode his bicycle on his own....no training wheels.

When Paul's science project was placed in Pittsburgh's planetarian...how thrilled we all were.

As I grow older every day I try to remember many decades of my life and the people who occupied this planet the same time I do.   When I light a 'remembrance candle' it bothers me that I might leave some name out.

I stand in my kitchen and rehearse in my mind all the souls that have enriched my life, and there are many...members of my family and dear friends.

I cherish all these memories because that is what my life is all about.    Even my dogs live on in my passwords and they were just precious mutts that I loved dearly.

I'm so very grateful for the time that is allotted to me.

How things are wrapped!

Including packaging have sure changed. When we had our toy store, a blister package was a thin sheet of plastic over the item, and you would pull it apart as easily as peeling a banana.

Today, not so. It's just about the hardest chore on my schedule these days. However, I have a wonderful friend...Virginia, who lives right next door to me. One day she walked over with a present for me....a good pair of scissors made for slicing into todays's blister pack.

When she brought it over, I thought I would never have occasion to use it.

Well...this gift returned me from insanity to being very functional.

My old cell phone wouldn't hold a charge....so I made a new purchase of an upgraded one. Not only was the phone in rigid heavy-duty plastic....but the battery also came locked in a blister of it's own.

I wonder if the manufactures over in China giggled as they constructed these...............saying those stupid Americans will be cursing over this.

Anyway, back to Virginia and her magic shears.....cut right through all those heavy layers...and finally after cutting this way and that way.....hooray, I was able to retrieve my purchase.

Now....all I have to do is study the instructions. Help Virginia!!!!!!! And while I was struggling to open this...Jeff and Donna were on Skype with me...watching...and I don't want them to know how weak I am.

They were exchanging the $300. that they had entered into my old phone and putting that amount into my new cell.

Now I have to wait for someone to call me! I gotta use up some of that money!

My happy years

Dreams and our toy store!

Most of our customers took advantage of our hide away your lay a way!  Either they didn't have room to store the toys...or they had nosy children.

Either way it was a lot of work for us...but it paid the bills.  Our customers would gather in a pile all the toys they wanted to buy.  I would squat on the floor with our Gordon Toys tablet and write every single item.   Sometimes I stayed in that position for half an hour...and I was really able to get right up.

When I think about that posture today...it's hard to believe.

Anyway, Allen would drag their toys down to our basement and store them till Christmas eve...which I learned was Xmas noon.  Sometimes a customer would call and ask us to remove an item because it was advertised at a discount store cheaper.  Big stores like Kmart would use toys as a lost leader..and would sell it cheaper than we were able to buy it from our distributor.

Every year we did this at no extra charge to our customer...and what really bothered me then..and still does...about 12 people would not pick up their toys.

I don't know if they forgot...bought them someplace else...moved away...had a broken marriage...but we didn't want the children to have broken hearts.  I would try phoning them but often the phone was disconnected.   Then I would get on our phone and call everyone on our list who needed a special item that was hard to get...and they would fly down and thank us profusely!  One Christmas at midnight our phone rang and the voice said she forgot to pick up her toys...so my husband got out of bed and greeted her at our store.  Where else would you find service like this???

One woman came in with her son and let him collect a big pile of everything he wanted.  She told me she'd be in the next day with a down payment.  We never saw her again.   We didn't mind putting all the toys back...but what we did mind...her child's broken heart.  We carried everything...and our motto was WE THINK SMALL!

Frequently our phone would ring and the voice on the other end would start the conversation with...I've looked everywhere..and I can't find it....do you have a certain item.  This hurts ... I would answer that it just walked out the door with a customer.  I would her her sigh..and then she'd ask how much it went for.   Well, I learned that if you have a hard-to-get toy that you can't get, you can be very reasonable...so I would give her an unbelievable figure...   I was  always able to hear the gasp on the other end.   See I have a mean side too.

We also catered Christmas parties for different organizions American Legion, V.F.W. Lion's Club, churches and steel mills and PTA fun fairs.
I made up thousands of grab bags for those and put in magnets, rings, erasers, rulers, jacks, key chains, pens...and about 300 more different items.

Every year we would go to a toy show in a different state and the sales rep would tell us how much each manufacturer planned to  spend on advertising a particular item..so we would stock up heavily on his guidelines.

At Christmas Time we found THEY LIED!

Anyway as time went by, toys became more expensive and sophisticated!  I never did learn to master Rubik's Cute.   We had Simon Sez on display at our checkout....and all day I would see the lights and hear the beeps and that was our first electronic toy!

I dream about our store very often....and I guess the Disney melody is true....A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES!

Is Life Better Now...I know it's easier

Our ancestors would not even recognize the world as we know it today.   Reading...writing...arithmetic....these don't exist much today.

Lots of our reading time is spent watching real television reality shows or DVD's and not the underwear.

Writing is becoming a shorthanded way with texting...and numbers are all done with calculators ......bringing everything to its exact lowest common denominator.   But I'm not knocking it...thank God for the calculator...I was never good in math...couldn't get the concept of numbers.   Now I know that everything in life has math in it...including the longevity of our lives.

But life is beautiful and I do appreciate it all...especially having Jeff and Donna moving here so that we could be close.   Those are my good times.   My friends, of which I had many, have disappeared one by one, in numerous ways.

When my husband Allen was alive, we considered taking a drive in our car a good time and stopping for an ice cream cone on the way home...or going window shopping.

When we smiled at people...they smiled back...and it was a good feeling.

Today our inward alert system is ever vigilant watching for suspected terrorists.   Big Brother is always watching.   I don't even watch local news any more since most of it is based on murders.

I'll never be able to understand why a human being wants to take another one's life....or for that matter, have so little disregard for their own life that they're a human bombs.

Our political world in our United States is topsy turvey.   One of our front runners is an imbecile...and the other has lied to us.

But, after all, who hasn't told a lie to make something sound better.   I've even told friends that I enjoyed their cooking when I wanted to gag.    Being kind is everything.

I've wondered if I met someone just like me....would I even want to be friends with me.

Food for thought.

I do enjoy the world today with all its updates and robots...and I wonder what's coming next.

Feeling God's Presence

Feeling the Presence of God

I'm inspired...just looking out my window!   There's choreography going on with all the leaves in my sight.   I have some mighty trees and they all have healthy, sturdy branches and boughs, festive  with the greenest leaves...and when the wind blows, it's a sight to behold...they're all doing a dance...graceful as can be...and I never get tired just watching.

It makes me know that God is in charge and the performance outside my window proves it.

It's spring and even the newest green leaves have joined in, firmly attached, and it's like a big chorus where they all move.   No wall flowers on my tree!    They move in unison!  And when the sun shines between the branches, that's an added bonus...it's in 'living color

They dance and if a bug is on a leaf, they get a real ride...just like going to Disney.   There are thousands of leaves just moving around right in front of my vision and I'm delighting in every one.

If I desire to open my window, I get sound!   The melody of the rustling of the leaves...so tranquil and sweet.     It makes me feel happy from within.

And when fall comes...we have mulch.

Shredded Leaves are natures favorite mulch. Shredded leaves can be used as mulch anywhere and have the added bonus of being free

Much better than dancing with the stars!   This is no competition...more like dancing with the sky!

These are living things and I treasure each leaf for the happiness and the natural air conditioning it brings.  The birds also take pleasure in my tree...a resting place from their flight.   Even the squirrels scamper up and down the trunk....so much fun!

In Genesis in the Bible, the tree is one of the very first things that God created..and all through the ages our ancestors have seen what I'm writing about.

Dear Reader, you, too, can have a thrilling day...just look out your window!

So much excitement...and all for free!  Take it all in!

A Blessing for a Surrogate Mother

9
I just had to put this in my blog

“Do you know of a prayer for a surrogate?” The question came over Facebook Chat a few nights ago, sent by a young woman in my community named Tara. In the coming days, Tara will begin carrying an embryo for a couple who were not able to conceive on their own.  For Tara, this has been a deep spiritual journey. She has two children of her own, and felt so blessed by easy and healthy pregnancies. And while cherishing her own beautiful sons, she felt overwhelmed by the deep pain and heartache that infertility causes to so many people. Tara knew she wanted to help.
In the Hebrew Bible, we meet many women who struggle with infertility. There’s Rachel, who watches her sister carry baby after baby, struggling herself to conceive her own beloved sons, Joseph and Benjamin. There’s Hannah, who is so deeply pained by her inability to bare a child, that when she prays with all of her heart, Eli the Cohen believes that her passion and her devotion is a sign of being drunk. Hannah sways back and forth, opening her mouth, and only releasing a voice that is loud enough for she herself to hear. This kavanah, or deep intention, is the model that we use for personal prayer today.
Possibly the most well known story of infertility is found in this week’s Torah portion—Vayera.  After struggling for years to conceive, Sarah is told that she and Abraham will have a child in their old age – and she laughs, and thus the child is given the name Yitzhak. Our rabbis teach that her laughter carries with it a feeling of surprise and even doubt. And yet, I prefer to focus on the essential truth that exists within big, unbridled laughter—tremendous, heartfelt, contagious joy. Sarah would finally know the extraordinary joy of being a mother.
Today, I know so many women and men who desperately want to experience that very same joy.
In just a few short days, an embryo will be implanted within Tara’s uterus, formed by a loving mother and father who are unable to create a baby without Tara’s help. And so, for Tara, I have written this blessing:
Makor HaChayim, Source of Life
= = = = == = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = == = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Inspire me to become a holy vessel, blessed with the opportunity to carry this precious seed, providing nourishment and warmth within the deep embrace of my womb.
Infuse me with patience. Through each hour of each day, may I have the strength to feel the blessing of the moment, knowing that with each breath that we share, life is closer to being renewed.
Rekindle within me courage, for in holding this seed, I am not merely making a child—I am also creating a mother and a father. I am forming a family. And within that family, a whole universe of possibility dwells.
And at this time, especially, instill within me the power and potential of love, that I may remain tender and devoted to all those who are connected to my heart.  As my body changes and grows, so may my capacity to embody love expand and unfold as well.

Senior learning!

Last week my friend Harriet and I decided we'd  like to join a group of seniors on a trip to St. Petersburg, Fl.  on a venture called Grandedventures.

It's a little pricey but we enjoyed our vacation at a new Hilton Hotel which was beautiful and our home away from home for a week.

We both felt we needed a little time away from our reservation  here at High Point to see new faces and study new people and courses.   There was a so-called religious man who came with a pretty woman whom I assumed was his wife.   He wore 4 different colored skull caps every day and he was constantly quoting from the Bible.   During one of my gossip sessions, I found out they were shacking up together.   I still get shocked!    What's wrong with me!   He  changed yarmulkes (skull caps) like a woman switching earrings.

The classes we attended were very interesting...and some of the speakers were familiar to us...the Russian Orthodox priest talking about his wife and their belief in the Trinity.   We also were happy to reunite with our music lady talking about Cole Porter...and the next day showing us clips of Gene Kelly and that he came from Pittsburgh where I come from and that he had a dance studio where he gave lessons early on.

We spent New Year's eve listening to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.   I have never seen such a huge stage..and we didn't just listen to the music of the masters...but we watched magical ballet and heard lots of opera.   I was entranced.   Perfect.   My only complaint...everything was in German...and I still haven't forgiven them for the Halacaust.

The food at the hotel was all right.   We all got served the same menu and there weren't too many complaints .   Anything served to me is good.   Let's face it...I'm getting very lazy.  All the deserts were sugar free which wasn't such a great idea because to some people the artificial stuff is poison in their bodies.

Our week was good...went very fast.   We were very cold so we wern't able to take the boat ride offered...but we did get to see the Barnum-Ringling Bros. Circus Museum.

One man spent 50 years  building a matchbox scale of the circus....and that really interested me...such detail....  He included all the trains, animals, performers, tents, and even how they prepared their food....and the dishes they used... a view into their lives and how  hard these people worked to install the tents and then a day later...take it all down again....and do it in another city.

In those days, many of the artists were considered freaks of nature...the bearded lady...twins joined together,,, Siamese and which they're able to separate today.....dwarfs and very tall people over 7 feet.

All that is changed today.   I do remember the day the circus would come to our town and we were all excused from school to watch the circus parade with their big elephants and Arabian Horses.   What a treat that was.

I recall that one year they were selling periscopes for 25 cents.   That was a lot of money when you're 8 years old...but the vendor promised that I would be able to look behind me to see the homework of a classmate.   I fell for it..and was I ever disappointed.  But that was decades ago.

/Returning home from our trip we experienced a massive blowout on our bus tire.    Not every garage can accommodate a bus....so we waited almost 3 hours.   The bus company sent another bus from Miami...but in the meantime a garage came....so we were rescued.

While all this excitement was happening,  Seth who owns Grandedventures brought all of us wine, crackers, cheese and little veggies.   There was such a feeling of camarderie on that bus that we hadn't experienced all week....so everything serves a reason.  When Seth, his wife and son boarded our bus while we were delayed he was received with such applause...he'd come to save us!

I'm glad I went...I'm glad I'm home!

It's called HOME

Watching well-built million dollar homes on TV  makes me aware that I have everything I want and need owning the little home where I live.

It has every conceivable thing  anyone could ask for.  Granted I don't have a stainless steel refrigerator, but what I have keeps my food ice cold....and the outside wall holds  all pertinent information such as my living will.   I want it where everyone can see I want no hookups.

I don't have granite countertops, but I love the formica  that I have.

My flooring, made of of laminate is so enjoyable to my feet that I walk around barefooted and content.

My two bathrooms are one more that I  need but I enjoy having it....with a shower and a bathtub....take your choice!

My extra large bedroom is where I live with my big flat picture screen, my computer and my queen size bed....and a leather recliner.  .

I also have a loft if anyone needs an extra bedroom.

I'm so happy here...and content...and feel very lucky and grateful.

I LOVE MY HOME!!I\\

New Kensington residents take to the streets in hopes of reviving the downtown scene

New Kensington residents take to the streets in hopes of reviving the downtown scene

My town and they're trying to revive it.   Like many towns across the United States, they are boarded up and reduced to what used to be known as a ghosttown.

I remember when it was booming....before progress took hold.   Before K marts and Cosco....before malls replaced these mom and pop stores.

When we didn't know what to do with ourselves we would go window shopping...downtown...and that was fun.   Then we'd go to Woolworth's or Murphy's, or Isaly's and indulge ourselves in a milkshake.

Later, my husband Allen and I owned a toy store...Gordon Toys on 4th Avenue....but then after years...everything halted and our town literally 'died'.

Now the do gooders are trying to revive it.   Can they???   Will they???   I sure hope so.

New Kensington’s future on display for a day

In its heyday around 1950, New Kensington was a bustling town of 25,000 people, considered the gateway to Westmoreland County. It had its own brewery, library, dairy, railroad station, newspaper, opera house and fire department.
Half a century later, after the decline of industry in the region and the loss of half of its population, today’s downtown New Kensington is full of empty storefronts and faded signs. A few small businesses struggle to bring in new customers.
On Saturday, however, visitors can get a glimpse of what the town might become.
From noon to 8 p.m., downtown New Kensington will be transformed with pop-up businesses in empty storefronts plus food, art, music and lights as part of a revitalization initiative called Better Block.
Better Block is a community improvement project that began on one block in Dallas, Texas, in 2010 and has spread to dozens of cities across the country, including San Francisco, Cleveland and Youngstown, Ohio. The project focuses on bringing together city officials, local nonprofits, businesses and residents to clean up, repaint and restore a commercial downtown area.
“This is a downtown makeover to show what New Kensington could be,” said Jessica Levine, ReStore manager for Habitat for Humanity of Allegheny Valley and an organizer for the second Better Block event in New Kensington. “To showcase the town’s potential, we have a pop-up dog park, two stages booked with live music, a beer garden built from pallets, a pop-up winery and art gallery, and dozens of food and craft vendors.”
The now-defunct Hart’s department store building will hold a vintage wedding show, displaying dresses from the ’40s through the ’80s, some bought at Hart’s, complete with stories from the women who wore them.
“We want to show a safe and wonderful downtown in the evening hours,” Ms. Levine said. “A dozen different people will give you a dozen different reasons why New Kensington has changed. What will bring it back is young people who see the potential. It takes people with energy and commitment.”
New Kensington Mayor Tom Guzzo praised the people working together to create a vision of the future for a single day.
“It creates a certain kind of buzz. This is the second Better Block event we’ve had. The first was in May, and we had over 2,000 people turn out. From a city perspective, it is great to see that much life and energy come back to the downtown area. It allows us to transform downtown and show what it can be,” Mr. Guzzo said. “This is done mostly by volunteers all pulling together.”
The city will provide some services and allow the use of some public properties, he said, but the cost is not significant. A $3,500 grant from the Greater Alle-Kiski Association of Realtors is paying for insurance and the use of public facilities for the day.
Public art projects are planned by art students from Valley High School, the Pittsburgh Office of Public Art and local artists, who are working to connect new and nostalgic imagery of downtown.
In one empty storefront, a team from the Penn State’s New Kensington campus will offer a pop-up tech/entrepreneur shop.
The event will take place along Fourth and Fifth avenues and Ninth and 10th streets. Streets will not be blocked off, but sidewalk areas will be expanded for seating. Temporary crosswalks and bicycle lanes will be installed by local university students.

song of the bamboo

we are here .....tall and straight.... we bend and sway..

we yield, forgive, teach, be

we have been forever.....

we speak, we sing

we know the answers, yet no one asks

we require silence, attention, peace, a mindful awareness

we wait, watch, know

we are silent until the wind blows..... wind older than time.....our friend

through the wind we sing,
the sound of a rusty gate that leads to home, low, throaty, soft

we choose the wind that brings life to what we say, not all are worthy

we wait for those who understand, who listen to the void before, during, and after our words

we have stories to tell about the beginning and the end

we bend

we wait for you to listen

we watch you pass, quickly, talking

we wait for you to listen

to our song

Frustrated...or is it me???

About ten years ago, hotels and motels came out with a new form of key.   Plastic like a charge card and you insert it in the room you're renting.
Well..sounds good...but does it work...at least some of the time.   I swipe it in the hotel slot in the door...and nothing happens...except for a red light.  Now I know that red lights mean trouble...so I instantly remove.

Now I try again turning the card in a different direction...same story.   I insert the card again and get a green light, but if you don't remove the card fast enough, it shuts off.  And this ritual goes on and on!

Five minutes have passed by now and I feel stupid, plus ..   I have to use the bathroom.

Finally another guest comes along and smiles at me.   I return the smile but I guess she can see utter disappointment in my face because she asks, can she help me.

I admit that I'm stuck outside my door.  I can't get in.   She takes my card...does exactly what I did...and the door flies open.

She feels very accomplished and I feel like a real dud.   She probably told someone she helped an elderly lady get into her room and why is she traveling at all if she can't even us a cardkey.

Does this happen to other people too....or is it just me????

Please .. please.. give me my old key back...even a skeleton one will do.

I'm being accused!

I'm being accused of becoming a recluse by my friend Virginia.    Perhaps she's right!   I don't go out much except to buy groceries at Publix or Winn Dixie.

Gotta eat don't I?     We're in the afternoon rainy season and usually afternoons is when I tend to leave my house to go shopping.

But the truth of the matter is when I moved here I had more friends than I could handle.   When I had a dinner party, I had to invite about l2 to 14 people....and that was with eliminating some hoping they wouldn't find out.   I enjoyed having friends but now I know it's all in timing.

One of my favorite authors years ago Helen Van Slyke wrote:

As the years passed that number dwindled down .. and down .. and down.

Some passed on .. while others went to live in retirement homes where they get catered to.

Which, for me, narrowed my field down to nothing.    I'm feeling the loss.

Younger people have moved into our community of 333 units, but they're all much younger, and who wants to be stuck with someone who could be their mother.

I understand the situation well.    I still talk on the phone to a few friends, but the sad part of that is they've lost a good deal of memory.

So...I busy myself with my computer, books, my children, and TV.... and that keeps me pretty well satisfied.

I still consider myself very fortunate.....I'm living in a cute little villa...and I'm still alive!  And this was written on friendship

On Friendship
 Kahlil Gibran
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.

And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is
