window treatment

When I was in Pennsylvania we called them Venetian Blinds...do they still make them. Haven't seen them in years!

When I moved to Florida, it all had verticals...the thing to do...and so easy to keep clean.

Except for the folks who still wanted their drapes and curtains, which really makes a house a home...warm and cozy!

Which makes me remember how difficult it was for my Mother when I was a little girl.

For those who remember the wooden curtain stretchers in the 30's The stretcher had very sharp pins around the edges to hold the curtains while they dried. They were adjustable with metal clamps that secured the ruler-like frame

How hard housekeeping was in those days. How easy everything is today.

If you don't feel like vacuuming...buy yourself a little robot that runs around your house all day picking up dust.

It's a different time. Better? I dunno!!!

I remember the curtain stretcher.
I used to help my mother put the
curtains on these when she washed
them. and then in early spring we
would "take up" the winter rug and
hang it over a clothesline and hit
it with what looked like a tennis
racket. Then the "summer" rug would
be put down on the floor and the
same thing would be repeated after
the summer was over. My sister was
always theatrically inclined and
would organize the children on the
block to do a "play" in our backyard of the apartment house.
We would borrow folding chairs and
sell tickets yes, for $.25 cents
and serve lemonade. We had a "ring
master" with a cardboad made top
hat..His name was Dickie Sheldon
he would "announce" the acts. One
child would sing, another would
dance, one would tell jolks and
one would dress up and imitate the
"stars" of the day. that would be
my sister. You could always count
on her to mimic someone and she was
quite good at it (she still is) her
career didn't go too far, but she
did land a part in the Amityville
Horror film. and has her Aftra card
to prove it. She is still a member
of the Screen Actors Guild to this
day. She did voice overs for some
children's books also. Isn't it sad
that we didn't have the photography
we have now to capture some of these moments on film..Boy would I
love to see pictures of those shows
we put on.

Hi Pat, I'd forgotten all about the shows we put on.

My sister would drape over the clothesline a blanket and we would also charge money for our shows.

We weren't as uppity as you...we only charged a nickel...but come to think of it...that's all our shows were worth.

Those really were 'the good ole days!

Certainly simpler times..The kids
today don't know what they are
missing..what with Ipods, myspace
and all that junk...Yes it's junk
as far as I'm concerned..that's
why so many of them today are obese. They never get off the chair. We ran, playing hide and seek, johnny on the pony, walked
everywhere, roller skated, danced.
Don't see much of that unfortunately..Dancing maybe (if
that's what they call it). Maybe
dancing with the stars will encourage some young ones to start
dancing again..
